May Meeting Recap

Hilary Rice was our guest speaker for our May 2014 meeting. Hilary, who is a story teller, entertained us with stories of how she came to quilting and moved onto becoming a textile artist in a somewhat indirect way. Although she learned to sew and to do other stitching as a child which included sewing on her mother’s crank sewing machine, she was encouraged to pursue music in high school and went on to receive a degree in music.

She recounted that when she broke a sewing machine needle on her mother’s crank sewing machine her mother was mortified as that was the needle that had been in the machine forever. When Hilary lived in BC she discovered quilting and moved into the world of making art quilts. As a textile artist she is self-taught and is willing to share her skills and techniques by teaching workshops and through her patterns and kits.

It is interesting to read on her website (http://www.mestudios.ca ) that she was able to connect her art and her music. She writes: “It is also interesting when many people view my work; they see influence from my music – saying it virtually sings! In a mysterious and profound way, my music and my art are deeply connected.”

Here are a few photos of Hilary’s creations:

As membership for 2014-15 has been capped at 120, registration is open to current members until August 31, 2014 at which time membership will be open to new members. See details in the join section of the website.

April Meeting Recap

4/9/2014

The morning started with a lively auction. Members donated fabric, books, magazine, etc. and then our in-house auctioneer went to work to auction off all the items. She had lots of help with others sorting and bundling the goods and a couple of other members recorded all the transactions. Over $1000 was raised.

Our president outlined our new registration process for Guild year 2014 -15 which will be included in our next newsletter. We have capped our membership at 120. To guarantee your membership for next year be sure to register before the end of June.

The Wortley Village Buildings challenge is due at our next meeting on May 14

March Meeting Recap

3/12/2014

It was another snowy day in Wortley Village and for that matter in all of south western Ontario.
Shirley Bobier, owner of the The Marsh Store in Coldstream and our guest speaker, showed us finished projects and products. We were introduced to pre-cut fabrics and all the different names such as jelly rolls, charm packs, layer cakes and honey buns, to name a few from Moda Bake Shop. Doesn’t it make you hungry? Once you have mastered all those names then you discover that another company has different names. We discovered that there are trim tools, templates and rulers to make our quilting life easier and accurate. Shirley showed us a bag made with fabrics by her new favourite fabric designer who is Lynette Anderson from Australia.

One of the quilts that Shirley showed was made from a jelly roll and mini charm pack from the same lot.

Thank you to Shirley for the donation to our library, of the book “Quilter’s Handy Guide to Supplies and More” by Dawn Cameron-Dick.

Here are photos of a few of Shirley's quilts

We had a demonstration of our website which at this stage is accessible to TVQG members only as it is password protected. The website and password were shared with members at the meeting and will be included in the minutes of the March meeting. Once the protocols have been established the Members area will be the only password protected area.

February Meeting Recap

2/12/2014

Gwen, our president mentioned that we have hit yet another record for another cold day for the winter that never ends. It seems as though all quilters are looking for a familiar print in the Sochi Olympic Quilt of 2014.

Vivian Tserotas, an award winning textile artist based in London, Ontario was the guest speaker at our February meeting. She gave us a glimpse into her journey as an artist by telling us stories of her works as well as what inspires her and how she stays inspired. Vivian works with many layers on her pieces and enjoys the process of creating. Thank you, Vivian.

Membership is capped at 120 and members will have an opportunity to register for 2014 -15 up to September 1, 2014 before it will be opened up to non members.

Brenda showed two of her creations that she is doing for a challenge with another Guild. The participants were given two pieces of fabric, could add 3 other fabrics to it, has to have something that floats/ 3d and the total outside measurement to be 85 inches. Brenda is only submitting one of the pieces as the other did not meet all of the requirements. Some techniques would be great if Brenda demonstrated them to the rest of us.
