President’s message
April 2024
April 2024
Hello everyone.
The arrival of spring and its associated elements like warmer weather and blooming flowers can inspire a shift in quilting projects. Some quilters may be drawn to create quilts featuring floral patterns or bright, cheerful colours that reflect the vibrancy of the season. Others might incorporate lightweight fabrics or choose quilt designs that evoke feelings of renewal and rejuvenation. The change in seasons can definitely influence the aesthetic and themes of quilting projects. Are you considering any specific spring-inspired themes or motifs for your quilting projects?
It's great to be able to acknowledge those who step up to fill executive positions and those who continue to serve in their roles. Their dedication will help ensure the smooth operation and success of the guild. I would also like to acknowledge the contributions of members who have served on the executive for the past few years .. Their hard work and dedication have undoubtedly contributed to the guild's success and growth.
The appliqué workshop was a great success. Workshops like these can be valuable learning experiences for members, fostering creativity and skill development. It's exciting to anticipate the beautiful quilts that will result from the techniques learned. If you participated in the workshop, do you have any specific quilting projects in mind that you're eager to work on?
Hosting a vendors market at April's meeting will be an exciting opportunity for members to explore and support local businesses and to discover new products. Holding April's meeting in the gym provides ample space for both the general meeting and the vendors' presentations.
We will be starting with the general meeting and then transitioning to the vendors' presentations and shopping. To ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate and engage with the vendors there will be no show and share this month.
I'm excited to see what creative projects the members have come up with for the president's challenge at May's meeting.
Thank you to everyone who stepped forward to give us a full slate for next year.
Here is the proposed slate of the Executive for 2024-25 The Workshop committee would like one more member, if you might be interested? Thank you Deb Owens, Past President

OBITUARIES
It is with sad news that we have lost two of our members this past month.
Please click on the links below to view their obituaries.
Both members were active in the Guild.
Mary was 100 years old when she passed, and when she was with the guild she was a much valued member.
Yvette was everywhere in the guild. I don't think there is a member today that had not been touched by Yvette's energy. She will be greatly missed.

Huron County Museum is hosting a virtual webinar presentation about World War II Comfort Quilts by expert Lucie Heins from the Royal Alberta Museum next week! Please feel free to share with anyone who might be interested in attending.
One of the quilts repatriated through the efforts of Lucie and the Canadian Red Cross Quilt Research Group was from Exeter in Huron County.
The presentation is completely free and online, so you can watch from the comfort of home under a comfy quilt!

CREATIVE IDEAS FOR OUR GUILD
Hi Quilters.
With our new venue and our large, new membership our Guild finds itself in a different position than 5 years ago. The new Executive is looking for ideas to bring our group together, create a community feel, and allow us to get to know each other a little better. There is not a lot of time to exchange ideas at our meetings, so we thought to send out a targeted email to some of our creative members, both new and old asking you to share your thoughts and ideas around how to make the Guild better. All ideas, suggestions are welcomed as is thinking outside the box. We ask you to also reach out to your smaller circle of quilting friends and discuss some of these questions with them. Please check out other guilds and see what they are doing and how it is working. Many heads will generate a wealth of good ideas!
Once the results are gathered from you the results will be presented to the executive. They will look at these and determine which can be implemented going forward.
Here are some areas of inquiry:
FOCUS #1
Business meetings.
Members generally attend this meeting for the program.
However, attending just to relax, be informed, and talk with like-minded people is a huge part of the Guild meeting too.
What could we incorporate in our meetings to add to that experience?
How long should the actual business be. How could we make that portion shorter?
What could be added to a Program meeting to make it more inclusive for everyone?
What Ideas do you have for President’s Challenge?
More Tips?
What about an informative short segment such as historical quilting facts, review of favorite blocks, quilting in different countries? Introduce a member.
FOCUS#2
Let’s Quilt Day
Continue with demonstrations but add something else to the day to encourage more members to come out so we can gradually meet others. Common activities that might be interesting?
Ideas: Feature a couple of our own members bringing a few quilts for a mini trunk?
Consider spending more money to rent the Gym and enlarge our space with more tables so members could bring machines to sew for a morning.
FOCUS#3
Committees
Consider the committees we have library, refreshment, program, workshop, Web, outreach and make suggestions of how to make them run better and add more value to the Guild. Please think about these and help by giving some feedback you feel may help them.
Focus #4 Show and Share
What can we do to encourage more members to participate?
Should we have themes, requests for specific kinds of quilts at a given meeting?
What about having a show and share of the Outreach quilts at every meeting?
Other ideas?
This is a very broad and open ended survey really just a jumping off point so please include anything else you consider important that isn’t specifically addressed. In order to plan, the Executive is hoping to get responses by June 1st. Meribeth is leading this initiative so please email her or call her at 519 672 0148 to forward your ideas.
Please note that June 1st is the final date for submissions.
Thanking you in advance for helping make the guild one of the best around.
