GENERAL MEETING

Our guest today is Elaine Theriault also known as Crazy Quilter on a Bike.
Her topic was about modern quilts. Since our group has a lot of traditional quilt it turned out not to be a hard sell.
According to Elaine "Modern quilts aren't really modern, they have been around forever". Many blocks used in modern quilts are basically traditional blocks with slight tweeks.

Some components of the modern quilt are
  • negative spaces that are prominent. The negative space can incorporate lots of quilting designs. Sometimes the use of materials that are subtle can be used in the negative area.
  • no sashing between blocks
  • Scale is another component.  Blocks used can be of various sizes, not necessarily all one size.
  • bright colours for high contrast
  • pixelation - the use of small squares to make a larger image.
  • tessellation - using one or more geometric shapes with no overlaps or gaps
  • arrows are currently very popular in the modern quilt
  • no borders - just the binding as a finish.

Elaine also reminded us to just play with our fabrics.  Start with a small project, be improvisational. Try working with just solids, or tone on tone, or batiks rather that the flowery prints traditional quilters use.  Make it what you want and have fun.
