NOTICE BOARD
JULY, 2023
Hello everyone.
I hope everyone had a great summer enjoying the sunshine, family, and friends. If you got any quilting done, or visited some new quilt stores on your vacation that is a bonus.
As summer ends the new quilt year starts. This year there are several new members on the executive as well as some experienced ones to help guide us newbies. We are hoping for the best year ever, but to make this happen we will need input from all members. The board has several new ideas. Some may end up being great and others not so. I hope you will all be understanding. This is your guild and we are only trying to do what you have asked for. This said, people have asked for more social time and more space for Let’s Quilt Day. To accomplish this, we are going to have our meetings in the gym. This is a trial. We can always go back to in the sanctuary if it doesn’t work.
Our first meeting is Wednesday, Sept 13, at 930 am. There will not be a program at this meeting so there will be lots of time to socialize, look around at all the committee’s displays to see if there is something you would like to volunteer to help with. The library will be open. Please remember to return any books you took out for the summer.
I will be giving you a quilting challenge at this meeting. In preparation for this, I am asking you all to bring a magazine or picture book to the first meeting. You may be curious but you will have to wait and see! Also, please bring a quilt to share. Remember, not to forget to go through your stash of fabric for the auction in Sept. If you have not paid your membership please do so.
Lastly, we are unable to have a quilt show in 2024 as we have no one to chair it. Hopefully we can in 2025. Please would someone or a couple of people consider stepping up to organize this. I am sure you will have lots of help but someone needs to be in charge. We will need to know by our October meeting.
Looking forward to seeing everyone.
Lynda Cox TVQG President for 2023-24.
CREATIVE IDEAS FOR OUR GUILD
Hi Quilters.
With our new venue and our large, new membership our Guild finds itself in a different position than 5 years ago. The new Executive is looking for ideas to bring our group together, create a community feel, and allow us to get to know each other a little better. There is not a lot of time to exchange ideas at our meetings, so we thought to send out a targeted email to some of our creative members, both new and old asking you to share your thoughts and ideas around how to make the Guild better. All ideas, suggestions are welcomed as is thinking outside the box. We ask you to also reach out to your smaller circle of quilting friends and discuss some of these questions with them. Please check out other guilds and see what they are doing and how it is working. Many heads will generate a wealth of good ideas!
Once the results are gathered from you the results will be presented to the executive. They will look at these and determine which can be implemented going forward.
Here are some areas of inquiry:
FOCUS #1
Business meetings.
Members generally attend this meeting for the program.
However, attending just to relax, be informed, and talk with like-minded people is a huge part of the Guild meeting too.
What could we incorporate in our meetings to add to that experience?
How long should the actual business be. How could we make that portion shorter?
What could be added to a Program meeting to make it more inclusive for everyone?
What Ideas do you have for President’s Challenge?
More Tips?
What about an informative short segment such as historical quilting facts, review of favorite blocks, quilting in different countries? Introduce a member.
FOCUS#2
Let’s Quilt Day
Continue with demonstrations but add something else to the day to encourage more members to come out so we can gradually meet others. Common activities that might be interesting?
Ideas: Feature a couple of our own members bringing a few quilts for a mini trunk?
Consider spending more money to rent the Gym and enlarge our space with more tables so members could bring machines to sew for a morning.
FOCUS#3
Committees
Consider the committees we have library, refreshment, program, workshop, Web, outreach and make suggestions of how to make them run better and add more value to the Guild. Please think about these and help by giving some feedback you feel may help them.
Focus #4 Show and Share
What can we do to encourage more members to participate?
Should we have themes, requests for specific kinds of quilts at a given meeting?
What about having a show and share of the Outreach quilts at every meeting?
Other ideas?
This is a very broad and open ended survey really just a jumping off point so please include anything else you consider important that isn’t specifically addressed. In order to plan, the Executive is hoping to get responses by June 1st. Meribeth is leading this initiative so please email her or call her at 519 672 0148 to forward your ideas.
Please note that June 1st is the final date for submissions.
Thanking you in advance for helping make the guild one of the best around.
